Volunteering has always been an important part of my life.
For many years, I ran a nonprofit organization that offered services to people with disabilities and their families. I spent countless hours planning and leading all kinds of recreational and educational activities.
All of this took place in Venezuela, where we lived for more than 40 years.
Now, in Gainesville, Florida, while working full-time in healthcare, I found myself missing the excitement of volunteering. I missed the opportunity to give back to the community and contribute to something meaningful.
So, I pitched an idea to the Adult Literacy Department at our local library:
«Could we start a Spanish conversation club for adults?»
The answer was an enthusiastic «Yes, of course!»
Our first session took place in August 2024, and we recently celebrated our second anniversary.
Nearly 60 participants later, I have a lot to share: what worked, what didn’t, lesson-planning ideas, conversation prompts that sparked lively discussions, and plenty of surprises along the way.
I am not a trained language teacher. I am a writer, a volunteer, and a conversation group facilitator who enjoys helping adults build confidence speaking Spanish.
This is where I will share my experiences leading a conversation group in a small Southern university town. I hope other facilitators, teachers, librarians, tutors, and language enthusiasts will find something useful here.
